The annual Recycled Fashion Show was created by Treasure City Thrift Store, a local volunteer-run nonprofit that raises funds for grassroots community groups, as a way to promote the creative reuse of old materials.

Local clothing and accessory designers have been encouraged to hunt for materials and inspiration at Treasure City for their collections . Participating designers were given bags to fill up with items from the store for free in exchange for putting at least one piece from their collections in a silent auction after the fashion show.

The fashion show is free and will be preceded by pre-show performances, including dances by Texas Roller Derby jeerleaders The Bomb Squad.

The show is followed immediately by an after party benefit at the Victory Grill (1104 E. 11th Street). The benefit will feature a silent auction of some pieces from the fashion show and musical entertainment by local acts, Blacklisted Individuals, Damp Heat, Sunset, and The Always Already. There is a $5 suggested donation. Proceeds benefit Treasure City Thrift Store.

The fashion show and benefit are collaborations with iLoveMikeLitt which also produced last year's show and benefit.

Kicking It (2008)

In the summer of 2006, while the football world's attention was focused on Germany, thousands of players around the globe were training hard and competing to be part of another world cup...The Homeless World Cup. It began in 2001 as a wild idea to give homeless people a chance to change their lives through an international street soccer competition. Five years later, the annual Homeless World Cup was an internationally recognized sports competition. 500 homeless players from 48 nations would ultimately be selected to represent their country in Cape Town, South Africa—coming from such disparate parts of the world as war torn Afghanistan, the slums of Kenya, the drug rehab clinics of Dublin, Ireland, and the the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina

If it ain't broke, don't trash it !

Have you ever picked up something you found on the curb or saved your neighbor from throwing away something useful? Have you ever brought one dish to a potluck and gone away with a full belly and a balanced meal? The Really Really Free Market is like that.

Instead of selling your stuff at a yard sale or trashing it, why not bring it down to the Really Really Free Market and meet people doing the same. The landfills are full enough already and you might find something you need, make a new friend or just have a good conversation.

The market is a mixture of reuse, recycling, sharing and community building. We share skills, goods, ideas, smiles, friendship, excitement, plans and more.

And it's growing every month...

The Really Really Free Market is looking for more free goods, skills to share, ideas and volunteers! Interested in participating, joining the free market organizing collective or simply want more info? Please contact Rachael Love right here.

There is enough for everyone !

As a community we have many more resources than we do as individuals. If we share our resources we won't need to buy as many new ones. This uses fewer of the Earth's resources, and fewer of our working hours, leaving us more time to devote to ourselves and our communities. What if we worked at improving our individual skills and talents and shared them with each other? We would all spend more time doing things we enjoyed.

The Really Really Free Market is an attempt to put these ideas into practice for four hours every month because a good day spent with good people is better than anything money can buy.

There will be:

Baby, Kids and Adult clothes & shoes
Housewares
Bedding
Books
Local, grassroots, community projects looking for new volunteers

It's not just us doing it! Read about the origins of the idea:
